Covid-19 cases are surging across the U.S., with a notable increase observed amid the summer months.

This rise in infections is raising concerns about public health and the effectiveness of ongoing mitigation efforts.

Dr. AK S, NBC News medical fellow, addressed the situation, explaining that this summer’s spike is more significant than previous ones.

Despite the high number of cases, which includes at least 40 Olympic athletes testing positive in Paris, the severity of the illness appears to be less than in earlier waves.

Dr. S noted that while cases are rising, most of the current infections are presenting with mild symptoms akin to the common cold.

Out of approximately 1,300 positive tests at NYU Langone Health, only a small number have required hospitalisation.

This shift in severity represents a significant change from the early pandemic days, when the focus was heavily on severe health risks and hospitalisation rates. Despite the increase in case numbers, the lower severity of symptoms provides some reassurance amid the ongoing wave.
