Mitchell Starc has withdrawn from Australia’s squad for the Champions Trophy, citing personal reasons. His absence adds to the significant number of changes already made to Australia’s provisional squad, which was impacted by injuries to Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood, and Mitchell Marsh, as well as Marcus Stoinis’ retirement.

Starc’s withdrawal means that Australia will be missing their entire frontline pace attack from their victorious World Cup squad. He had appeared uncomfortable during the second Test in Galle, but his decision to withdraw was made for personal reasons, with the full backing of the team.

“Mitchell is deeply respected for his commitment to international cricket, and his decision is understood and respected by us,” said George Bailey, Australia’s selector chair. “While his loss is a blow, it opens an opportunity for someone else to make their mark.”

In Starc’s absence, Steven Smith will take over the captaincy, a role previously held by Pat Cummins and Mitchell Marsh. Smith, who led Australia to a 2-0 Test series win against Sri Lanka, is ready to guide the team through the Champions Trophy.

A number of replacements have been called into the squad, including Sean Abbott, Ben Dwarshuis, Jake Fraser-McGurk, Spencer Johnson, and Tanveer Sangha. Fraser-McGurk, a top-order option, and left-arm quick Johnson, will be key players in the absence of Marsh and Starc. Sangha, a legspinner, joins Adam Zampa as a second frontline spinner.

Despite these setbacks, Bailey remains confident in Australia’s depth. “A strong core of our experienced players will provide a solid foundation as we attempt to win the Champions Trophy.”

Australia’s preparation for the Champions Trophy will begin with two ODIs against Sri Lanka in Colombo, with their first match of the tournament against England on February 22. Australia will also face South Africa on February 25 and Afghanistan on February 28.
