January is coming fast, and it’s the perfect time to give your look a fresh start. As we approach 2025, “New Year, new you, new hair” couldn’t feel more fitting. Goodbye to last year’s hairstyles and colors!
Short cuts dominated 2024 with flippy bobs and French bobs leading the pack, while longer locks gravitated toward layered butterfly cuts. On the color front, shades like black cherry, chocolate brown, and golden blonde were undeniable favorites.
For 2025, new styles are stepping into the spotlight—think ponytail cuffs and “Chappell-Roan Red”—while some timeless looks will carry over. Hair accessories remain in the limelight but with a luxurious upgrade. “Accessories will have a refined, elegant vibe in 2025,” shares Christine Bellemare, co-founder and lead stylist at Maven A Collect. Picture silk and velvet bows for romantic braids, gold cuffs to elevate sleek ponytails, and minimalist gem clips for a polished aesthetic.
As for color trends, the battle between warm and cool tones rages on. Brunettes are steering toward warm caramel and chestnut hues or cool, natural browns that channel “born-with-it” vibes, according to Bellemare.
Meanwhile, blondes lean into subtle, lived-in highlights with natural roots and cooler undertones for the winter months.
Here’s what the experts predict will dominate the new year:
1. Toffee Balayage
“Warm tones in brunettes are trending, and I’m absolutely loving it,” says Renée Valerie, director of R+Color education. Toffee balayage is the go-to for adding richness and a luminous glow to medium brunette shades.
2. Rooted Platinum Blonde
Low-maintenance blondes rejoice! “Platinum blonde isn’t going anywhere, but 2025 will bring a softer version with natural roots for easy upkeep,” says Chase Kusero, co-founder of IGK Hair Care. The key? A subtle root shadow that balances boldness with practicality.
3. ’90s Tousled Updos
The effortlessly chic, slightly messy updos of the ’90s are here to stay. Think Nicole Kidman and Pamela Anderson during their heyday. Christine Bellemare recommends starting with loose curls or waves, adding a light texturizing spray, and pinning the hair up while leaving soft face-framing tendrils. Elevate the look with silk bows or gold cuffs—ideal for weddings or nights out.
4. Curly Bangs
Curly bangs are proof that small changes can pack a big punch. They bring attention to the eyes and pair perfectly with natural curls. “Work with your curl pattern for a fun twist,” says Ryan Pearl, creative director at Tangle Teezer. Use a curl cream for definition, and detangle with the Tangle Teezer Naturally Curly brush to avoid frizz.
5. Ponytail Cuffs
Move over bows and clips—the ponytail cuff is 2025’s standout hair accessory. These versatile add-ons elevate both sleek low ponytails and bold, voluminous styles, combining function with style.
6. Supersized Claw Clips
Kim Kimble, creator of the Kim Kimble Hair Collection, attributes the popularity of claw clips to their blend of practicality and chic design. These oversized clips are perfect for effortless yet impactful looks.
7. Chappell-Roan Red
Rising star Chappell Roan’s signature hair color is already influencing trends. “A warmer take on red hair, this shade combines copper with golden undertones for a sunlit glow,” says Kusero. He suggests adding honey or caramel balayage to enhance brightness and dimension.
8. Modern Shag
The shag cut makes a comeback, but with softer, feathered layers that add texture and volume. Ryan Pearl notes that this style works especially well for curly or wavy hair. Pair it with a texturizing spray for maximum effect.
9. Blunt Bob
Bobs never go out of style, and 2025 will see the return of the one-length blunt bob. “It’s sophisticated and striking,” says Kimble, who recommends regular trims and a flat iron for a flawless, glassy finish
10. Cherry Cola Hair
Combining the depth of black cherry with the richness of mocha, cherry cola hair is a bold yet glamorous choice for 2025. “Visit a professional to custom blend these tones for vibrant results,” advises Kimble. Maintain the look with sulfate-free shampoos and color-depositing conditioners for a long-lasting shine.
