As Pakistan and India prepare for their highly anticipated Champions Trophy clash in Dubai tomorrow, former Pakistan captain Sarfaraz Ahmed has reminisced about his team’s historic 2017 victory over India.

In a heartfelt reflection, Sarfaraz recalled the iconic moment he lifted the ICC Champions Trophy, a memory that remains deeply cherished.
“I had just requested the boys to let me lift the trophy for a moment before everyone joined in. These cherished memories resurface every year when June 18 arrives,” he shared.

Reflecting on Pakistan’s journey to the title, Sarfaraz recalled the immense pressure of captaining the team in his first-ever match against India on June 4, 2017. Pakistan suffered a crushing 124-run defeat (DLS method) in their opening game but made a strong comeback.

Despite missing practice due to bad weather, Pakistan defeated South Africa by 19 runs (DLS method) on June 7, followed by a stunning 8-wicket semi-final victory over England in Cardiff on June 14. Sarfaraz highlighted the overwhelming support the team received in England, recalling how they did a lap of honour to acknowledge the fans.

The final at The Oval on June 18 remains one of the most celebrated moments in Pakistan cricket. Recalling a conversation with New Zealand’s Tim Southee, Sarfaraz mentioned how Southee called it an “easy win” for Pakistan. However, Sarfaraz disagreed, saying such victories require immense effort and resilience.

“Every player dreams of winning a title that is remembered for a lifetime,” he said.

Looking ahead, Sarfaraz expressed excitement for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, which Pakistan is hosting for the first time in 29 years. He praised the country’s preparations, stating the grounds are in excellent shape and the nation is eager for the tournament.

“We hope Pakistan will successfully defend their crown on home soil,” he added.

As Pakistan and India gear up for another high-stakes encounter, Sarfaraz’s reflections serve as a reminder of past glory and a source of inspiration for the current team.
