The critical warning to the public about the escalating threat of vector-borne illneses was issued by infectious disease specialist Dr Syed Faisal Mahmood.

While mpox currently poses a low risk, its high transmissibility makes caution essential, particularly for those travelling to or from affected regions.

He outlined key symptoms of mpox, including fever, headache, muscle aches, and distinctive rash or blisters.

In addition, Dr Mahmood highlighted the risks associated with Zika virus, especially for pregnant women, as it can lead to severe birth defects like microcephaly.

He advised pregnant women and those planning to conceive to avoid areas where Zika is prevalent, use insect repellents, and wear protective clothing.

He emphasised the necessity of public education in preventing these diseases, noting that awareness and prompt action can significantly reduce infection risks.

Dr Mahmood also called for community-level efforts to enhance understanding and prevention of vector-borne diseases.
