Alex Pereira has responded after a video surfaced of his ex-girlfriend celebrating his loss at UFC 313, which went viral over the weekend.
The 37-year-old Brazilian fighter lost his light heavyweight title to Magomed Ankalaev in a five-round decision at the pay-per-view event on Saturday.
Pereira, who was aiming to defend his title for a fourth time, suffered a dominant defeat to Ankalaev, who became the new 205lb champion. UFC commentator Joe Rogan criticised Pereira’s “uncharacteristic” performance, as he was outstruck for the entirety of the bout.
To make matters worse, Pereira’s ex-girlfriend, Merle Christine, took to social media to celebrate the loss, calling it “karma.” In an Instagram video, she congratulated Ankalaev on his victory and said, “No more Chama, karma. He lost on International Women’s Day, maybe that’s a sign.” Christine also dismissed critics calling the fight a “robbery,” labeling them as ignorant about MMA. She then ended the video with, “No more Chama!”
The video drew comparisons to a similar incident in boxing when Dmitry Bivol’s ex-wife celebrated his defeat to Artur Beterbiev.
Pereira, clearly upset by the public video, took to the comments section with a pointed response: “I think she should stop mentioning my name because her husband might get jealous, chama.”
As for his career, the future of the former champion seems uncertain following the loss. Prior to UFC 313, rumors circulated that Pereira might move up to the heavyweight division to challenge the winner of Jon Jones vs. Tom Aspinall, but such plans now seem unlikely.
UFC President Dana White has suggested an immediate rematch between Ankalaev and Pereira could be in the cards, a challenge that Ankalaev has welcomed. The new champion also made it clear that the light heavyweight division will remain open to all contenders during his reign.
Despite the disappointment, Pereira vowed to make the necessary adjustments ahead of a potential rematch in hopes of regaining his gold belt.
