Olympic Hero Arshad Nadeem receives car, cash prize from Punjab governor

Arshad Nadeem, who made history by winning a gold medal for Pakistan at the Paris Olympics after a 40-year drought, has been honoured by the Governor of Punjab, Sardar Salim Haider Khan.

The javelin star won first single gold medal for the country in the Paris Olympics with a mammoth 92.97 metres throw.

His win was Pakistan’s first individual gold medal, first track and field medal as well as the second time a South Asian has had a podium finish in track and field.

In a special ceremony held at the Governor House, Nadeem was presented with a car and a cheque for Rs2 million.

The governor hosted the event in Nadeem’s honour, where the Olympian, accompanied by his family, spent the night at the governor’s residence.

Upon his arrival, a red carpet was laid out, and Nadeem was welcomed with the beat of drums. In addition to the car and cash, the governor also gifted Nadeem a one-kanal and ten-marla plot.

During his speech, Governor Sardar Salim Haider praised Nadeem for bringing glory to Pakistan after many years, noting the enthusiastic reception he has received nationwide.

In response, Arshad Nadeem expressed his gratitude, attributing his success to his parents’ prayers and the support of his coach, especially after undergoing surgery earlier this year. He shared that despite a foul in his first throw, he managed to make his country proud with his second attempt.

Nadeem also thanked the Governor of Punjab for the love and recognition he received.

Yesterday, Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah hosted Arshad Nadeem, at the CM House with P&D Minister Nasir Shah, the ongoing provincial cabinet session was paused to welcome the national hero personally.

CM Shah highlighted Pakistan’s potential, suggesting the country should aim for at least 24 gold medals on the international stage. “Arshad Nadeem is our national pride,” said the chief minister.

Meanwhile, Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Syed Asim Munir on Friday appreciated Arshad Nadeem’s remarkable achievement of winning Pakistan’s first-ever gold medal in a singles’ event and setting a new Olympic record in javelin throw, attributing it to his commitment, perseverance, and passion for excellence.
