Kiran Rao, the director of “Laapataa Ladies”, recently reflected on her decision to divorce actor Aamir Khan, describing it as a “very happy divorce”. Rao stated that she and Khan took time to decide on the separation, ultimately feeling supported by both of their families.
In an interview, she explained, “Relationships need to be redefined from time to time as we grow. This divorce has made me very happy, honestly.” Rao and Khan confirmed their divorce in July 2021 after 15 years of marriage.
Rao shared that despite concerns about loneliness post-divorce, she hasn’t felt lonely, thanks to the presence of her son, Azad. “I am supported by both families, his family and mine. So, actually, it has been only good stuff.”
The filmmaker acknowledged the emotional and mental journey to end their marriage. “We needed to be secure in the fact that we are there for each other for the long term. It’s just that we don’t have to be married,” she said.
Rao expressed confidence in her continued relationship with Khan as co-parents and friends. “I felt secure that I would be able to have my independent time and my life ahead without losing the love and support from Aamir.”
She concluded by emphasising the strength of their partnership. “We don’t need the paper to say we are married. This partnership will stand the test of time despite the divorce.”
Rao and Khan met 20 years ago during the filming of “Lagaan”, where Rao was an assistant director.
