Karachi police announced on Wednesday the arrest of the primary suspect in the brutal gang-rape and murder of a 12-year-old girl. The young victim was discovered in a bag in the Saddar area of Karachi on Sunday.
Police surgeon Dr Summaiya Syed confirmed that the girl’s body was transported to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) for examination after being recovered by the Saddar police.
The tragic incident drew swift attention from Sindh Governor Kamran Tessori and Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah, who urged the police to expedite their investigation and apprehend those responsible.
Deputy Inspector General (DIG) South Syed Asad Raza revealed that the arrested suspect, a watchman employed at Bara Market near Cantonment Station, is believed to be the principal perpetrator. He noted that while three suspects have been identified, the other two—employees from the Shalimar bus terminal—are currently on the run.
Police utilised CCTV footage and advanced technical resources to make the arrest. DIG Raza indicated that investigators collected DNA samples from seven individuals and questioned over 20 suspects in connection with the case.
“This case presented significant challenges, but through the use of CCTV footage, we were able to identify the motorcycle and the suspects involved,” he stated. He assured that the individuals responsible for the girl’s rape and murder will face justice.
