Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) Chairman Rashid Mahmood Langrial has issued a stern warning that legal action will be taken against individuals who fail to submit their tax returns. The FBR is targeting high-profile sectors as part of its campaign to reduce tax evasion and streamline revenue collection.
Speaking at a press conference in Islamabad, Langrial confirmed that the FBR had issued notices to 190,000 individuals, of which 38,000 had submitted tax returns amounting to Rs370 million.
“Those who have not filed their returns and failed to pay their taxes will face consequences,” Langrial said. He stressed that the government was committed to tackling the growing tax gap in Pakistan, which currently stands at Rs7.1 trillion, with Rs2.4 trillion specifically attributed to income tax.
The chairman also highlighted the ongoing efforts to digitise the tax filing process, with a focus on the top 5% of taxpayers. “We are closely monitoring the sugar mills, particularly in Punjab, where several mills have been caught using fake or flying invoices,” he added.
