Cristiano Ronaldo voiced his belief that Vinicius Junior deserved this year’s Ballon d’Or, expressing disappointment over the annual award process while showing his preference for the “honest” Globe Soccer Awards.
Ronaldo’s comments came after Vinicius was narrowly beaten to the prestigious honor by Rodri, with the Brazilian finishing second in the Ballon d’Or voting.
Speaking at the Globe Soccer Awards in Dubai on Friday, Ronaldo said, “Galas always do the same thing,” highlighting his appreciation for the Globe Soccer Awards’ straightforward approach.
Vinicius, however, was not left empty-handed, as he claimed the Men’s Best Player award, a recognition that solidified his outstanding year.
The Real Madrid forward was also named the Best Forward of the Year, further cementing his growing influence in world football.
He triumphed over club teammate Jude Bellingham, who won the Best Midfielder of the Year award and the Maradona Award, as well as Ronaldo, who was also nominated.
Real Madrid dominated the event, with coach Carlo Ancelotti receiving the Best Coach of the Year award, while goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois was honored with a career achievement award.
Real Madrid was named Men’s Club of the Year, continuing their reign in global football.
In a personal achievement, Ronaldo was awarded the Best Middle East-Based Player and received a custom-made trophy recognising him as the top goal scorer of all time.
Ronaldo also took the opportunity to speak about his former club’s continued dominance.
Reflecting on his time at Madrid, where he helped secure four Champions League titles, Ronaldo expressed confidence in their future success.
“If you want to bet on a team in the Champions League, bet on Real Madrid,” he said, backing his old team to maintain their European supremacy after their recent victory in the 2024 Champions League against Borussia Dortmund.
