Former cricketer and television presenter Freddie Flintoff has opened up about the severity of the injuries he sustained in a near-fatal crash during the filming of Top Gear.
In a candid BBC documentary aired on Tuesday, Flintoff revealed the physical and emotional toll the accident has taken on his life.
The programme, Freddie Flintoff’s Field of Dreams on Tour, was originally scheduled for release in 2022 but was delayed due to the accident.
The documentary follows Flintoff as he mentors a group of young cricketers from Preston on a tour of India, despite his ongoing recovery.
In footage shown during the episode, viewers saw Flintoff just days after the crash, struggling with anxiety and the severity of his injuries.
Reflecting on the ordeal, he admitted that his road to recovery has been much harder than expected, sharing that he initially believed he could quickly overcome the trauma.
Flintoff’s honesty and determination to push forward, despite the challenges, resonated deeply with viewers.
Many praised his bravery and the positive impact he continues to have on the young athletes he mentors.
The documentary also highlighted a conversation between Flintoff and his coach, where he admitted that his recovery had not gone as planned and that he had struggled to leave his home for months.
Despite the setbacks, he remains committed to supporting the young cricketers on their journey.
Flintoff sustained significant facial injuries in the 2022 crash at Dunsfold Park Aerodrome in Surrey, which led to a settlement with the BBC reportedly worth £9 million.
The compensation, it was clarified, was not funded by the TV licence fee as BBC Studios operates commercially.
