OpenAI, the maker of the popular AI tool ChatGPT, is set to debut its first-ever TV commercial during the 2025 Super Bowl, according to a report by the Wall Street Journal, citing sources familiar with the matter.

The Super Bowl, which draws one of the largest global audiences, is a highly coveted advertising platform, with advertisers willing to pay a premium for the opportunity to showcase their products. The event is also known for its highly creative and buzz-generating commercials.

If confirmed, this would mark OpenAI’s first venture into commercial advertising, the report added. Last year, Google promoted its AI capabilities with a similar campaign during the Super Bowl.

The cost of a 30-second commercial spot during the 2025 Super Bowl has reportedly reached as much as $8 million, according to Adweek’s Chief Content Officer Zoe Ruderman. This marks an increase from the $7 million price tag for a comparable ad spot on CBS during the 2024 Super Bowl.

The 2024 Super Bowl attracted an estimated 210 million viewers. The 59th edition of the NFL championship game is set to take place on February 9, 2025, at the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans, with a seating capacity of 83,000.

OpenAI, led by CEO Sam Altman, released ChatGPT in late 2022, which has since grown to attract over 300 million weekly active users.

As the company continues to scale, OpenAI is reportedly in talks to raise up to $40 billion in funding, placing its valuation at approximately $300 billion. In a bid to strengthen its marketing efforts, OpenAI hired its first Chief Marketing Officer, Kate Rouch, in December 2023.
