Usman Qadir, the son of legendary leg-spinner Abdul Qadir, has decided to shift his focus to Australia to pursue his cricketing ambitions and has taken residence in New South Wales.
The 31-year-old leg-spinner, who represented Pakistan in one ODI and 25 T20Is, with a combined total of 32 wickets, is currently playing for the Hawkesbury Club in Sydney.
Having previously showcased his skills in the Big Bash League (BBL) with the Perth Scorchers and Adelaide Strikers, Qadir has also represented South Australia and Australia’s Prime Minister’s XI.
Despite his retirement from Pakistan cricket last year, the leg-spinner remains optimistic about his future in Australian cricket.
Speaking about his decision, Qadir said, “Cricket is my livelihood. I have come to Australia with future plans and am determined to explore good opportunities here.”
On October 3, 2024, Qadir officially announced his retirement from Pakistan cricket. This decision came four years after returning from Australia to commit his international future to Pakistan.
Reflecting on his career, Qadir shared a heartfelt message on social media:
“Today, I am announcing my retirement from Pakistan cricket,” Qadir said.
“As I reflect on this unforgettable journey, I want to express my heartfelt gratitude. It has been an immense honour to represent my country, and I’m thankful for the support of my coaches and teammates who have been with me every step of the way,” he added.
Qadir’s international career began on a high note during a T20I series against Zimbabwe.
Making his debut in the 20-over format, he took eight wickets for 60 runs in three matches, earning the Player of the Series award.
At his peak, Qadir was Pakistan’s primary leg-spinner, briefly keeping Shadab Khan out of the T20I lineup.
However, personal disappointments and limited opportunities led to his decision to step away from Pakistan cricket.
