In a bid to address the issue of overcharging at city cemeteries, Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab has directed the installation of banners across all registered cemeteries in the city, displaying the fixed burial rates set by the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC), which are set at Rs14,300, Express News reported.
As part of the initiative, Cemeteries Director Sarwar Alam visited KMC-operated cemeteries and instructed staff to adhere to KMC’s bylaws and prescribed rates. He stressed that no individual would be allowed to work at the cemeteries without proper KMC registration.
Alam also made it clear that strict enforcement of these regulations would take place, and any instance of overcharging would lead to stern action. This move follows reports of mafia groups operating at various city cemeteries, extorting extra money from citizens.
In response, the mayor initiated action, and now banners with the official rates are prominently displayed at KMC-run cemeteries to ensure transparency and prevent illegal practices.
